Spice up more than a latte with a new career this September. ²ÝùÊÓƵԴ´ Workforce Continuing Education classes can prepare students for a career as a licensed real estate agent or public notary. Construction, healthcare, and transportation courses will also be offered to help others advance in current employment.
Business
"Notary Public" is required for anyone interested in becoming a Notary Public for the first time. It is recommended for all notaries as a refresher course. It is strongly recommended that you study the guidebook before class to better prepare for the state examination at the end of the class. Note: The current edition of The Notary Public Manual for North Carolina, March 2016, ISBN: 978-1-56011-851-0, is required for admittance to the class and can be purchased at the SCC bookstore or on Amazon. It is strongly recommended that you study the guidebook prior to class attendance to be better prepared for the state examination given at the end of the class.
NCGS 10B-5(b) provides the following requirements to be commissioned as a Notary Public in NC: 1) Be at least 18 years of age or legally emancipated as defined in Article 35 of Chapter 7B of the General Statutes; 2) Reside or have a regular place of work or business in this state; 3) Reside legally in the United States; 4) Speak, read, and write the English language; 5) Possess a high school diploma or equivalent; 6) Pass the course of instruction described in this Article unless the person is a licensed member of the North Carolina State Bar; 7) Purchase and keep as a reference the most recent manual approved by the Secretary that describes the duties and authority of notaries public; 8) Submit an application containing no significant misstatement or omission of fact. Students must provide current state or federal picture identification for admission to class. Active-duty military and civilian I.D. cards do not meet the identification requirement.
"Notary Public" will be held on Tuesday, September 19, from 8 am-6 pm; this class will cost $75 plus the cost of the text.
"Real Estate Pre-Licensing" provides an intensive review of topics and prepares students for the N.C. Broker licensing examination. Topics covered include real estate terms, contracts, leases, ownership, licensing law, finance, listing and closing of property, property valuation, and building construction. 80% of classes must be attended to take the end of class exam. Once you pass the end of class exam with a 75% or higher, you can then apply to take the state exam. The prerequisite for this course is Work Keys Reading and Math, Level 5 or higher, or verification of a post-secondary degree. Held Mondays and Wednesdays, September 6-December 11, from 6–10 pm, this class will cost $185 plus the cost of the text. There will be no class on November 22, and makeup testing will be held on December 18.
"Real Estate Post-Licensing 301 Broker Relationships and Responsibilities" provides a review of agency relationships, sales, and commercial property management transactions, a real estate broker's legal duties to clients and customers, a step-by-step review and discussion of the functions and responsibilities of a real estate broker when working with sellers and buyers, a review of issues associated with transactions in progress when a broker leaves a firm, and a review of license status and education issues. Held Monday-Thursday, September 11-14, from 8:30 am-12 pm, September 18-21, from 8:30 am-noon. This class will cost $130 plus the cost of the text.
Construction
"NCCER Core + OSHA 10" will include basic safety, communication skills, and an introduction to construction drawings. Students earn NCCER Core and OSHA 10 certifications. This course is a prerequisite/co-requisite to Level 1 Electrical, HVAC, Plumbing, and Welding classes. Held Mondays and Wednesdays, September 5-December 14, from 6–9:30 pm, this class will cost $243.50 plus the cost of the textbook.
"General Contractors Update & C.E. Classes" provides General Contractors the necessary 8 hours of Continuing Education required to renew their licenses each year." Held Saturday, September 16, from 8 am-5 pm, this class will cost $110.
Healthcare
"CPR for Healthcare Providers" is for healthcare professionals who need to know how to perform CPR and other lifesaving skills in various in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings. Held on Saturday, September 23, from 8:30 am- 12:30 pm, this class will cost $50 plus a $5 card fee.
Transportation
In "Auto Safety Inspection," students will be certified to inspect motor vehicles under the N.C. Motor Vehicles Safety Inspection Law. You must have a valid driver's license for this class. Held Monday and Tuesday, September 11 and 12, from 6–10 pm, this class will cost $75.
"Commercial Learners Permit Prep" provides training in inspecting tractor-trailers and assuming driver responsibilities. Emphasis is placed on defensive driving, federal motor carrier safety regulations, vehicle systems, hours of service, and accident prevention. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate the knowledge to pass the required tests to obtain a class "A" learner's permit for the commercial driver's license. Held Tuesday-Thursday, September 5-7, from 6–10 pm, this class will cost $75.
Registration
Seats are still available for these Workforce Continuing Education classes and do not require an application. To register, call Continuing Education at (910) 695-3980 between 8 am and 5 pm Mondays through Thursdays and 8 am-noon on Fridays. All major credit cards are accepted. Pre-register at sandhills.edu/wce/cereg.html. Pre-registration must be made two days before the start date of the class.
Next Session
Continuing Education classes begin throughout the semester. New and returning students do not need to apply to the College, simply register for class.
An eight-week session of fall semester curriculum classes begins on October 11. Offered online and in hybrid class formats, classes take only eight weeks to complete and award full credits. For all information, go to www.sandhills.edu/learn.
New students taking curriculum/college credit classes must apply before registering. ²ÝùÊÓƵԴ´ has an open-door policy, which means all applicants are accepted. On www.sandhills.edu, new students can find the application at the top right. Returning or current students can register by using Self-Service located on MySCC.
Boys & Girls Club
A Boys & Girls Club unit is offered on the ²ÝùÊÓƵԴ´ campus. It runs from 2:30 to 6:30 pm for kindergarten through fifth grade. The club is ideal for parents/guardians taking SCC afternoon or evening classes, those who need study time, need to utilize the computer lab, or work on projects. Club participants will receive homework assistance, and dinner is offered. The cost is $40 per child per year. The club provides transportation from McDeeds Creek, Farm Life, and Carthage Elementary schools.
In addition, drop-in services are available free of charge to ²ÝùÊÓƵԴ´ students from 6-9 pm. This is ideal for students taking afternoon or evening classes, working on group projects, or for other academic reasons. Classes for High School Students
Moore and Hoke County High School students can take SCC classes as juniors and seniors at no cost. High school counselors can help schedule these classes or home or private school students can contact Kim McMillan at mcmillank@sandhills.edu.
Students who reside in Moore and Hoke Counties and successfully complete the required number of classes through ²ÝùÊÓƵԴ´ while in high school can qualify to receive two full years of paid tuition through our ²ÝùÊÓƵԴ´ Promise program. ²ÝùÊÓƵԴ´ awards over $350,000 to pay tuition and fees for ²ÝùÊÓƵԴ´ Promise students each year. The ²ÝùÊÓƵԴ´ Promise applications are due each year by mid-July.
