Winter is just around the corner-heat up your cooking skills. Join us for a culinary class where you can learn to bake fresh pies, whip up a delicious soup, or make a special Halloween treat. No matter which class you choose, our instructors will teach you everything you need to know to impress. If you need a place to drop off your children while you take a class, the Boys and Girls program at SCC is available to you.
"Bartending" will teach you the basics of bartending as a profession or for leisure. Topics include popular mixed drinks, wine, utensils, glassware, fruit cutting, bar procedures, and ABC laws. Held Saturdays, October 7-28, from 9 am-3 pm, this class will cost $75.
In "BBQ" you will look at different BBQ styles and preparations. Pellet grills, lump burning grills, charcoal, electric. Why are there so many, and when are they used? We also dive into the sauces of American BBQ. Tastings prepared in class. Held Wednesday, October 4, from 6-8 pm, this class will cost $75.
"Saucy" is all about sauces. The mother of sauces will be created in class, and we will also dive into the derivatives of these sauces. How and when to use what sauce and what additions will enhance our flavors. Small bites to taste sauces include chicken, beef, and broccoli. Held Friday, October 6, from 6-8 pm, this class will cost $75.
In "Savory Tarts," you will learn how to mix, shape, and create your own tart with seasonal ingredients. Chef Jason will teach you to make the perfect crust from scratch and how to prepare a classic quiche Lorraine for the class. Held Monday, October 16, from 6-8 pm, this class will cost $75.
"Knife Skills" will teach you to feel confident with a knife in the kitchen and help you reduce accidents by teaching sharpening and cutting techniques we can practice and use daily. Chicken wings and legs will be baked in class by students after learning how to break down a whole chicken. Held Monday, October 23, from 6-8 pm, this class will cost $75.
"Mexican Cuisine" will explore dishes that we order all the time. Let's check the authenticity. We will explore the trending Mexican cuisine, hoping to find some new flavors and dishes that we can surprise our guests right from home. Arroz con pollo or chimichangas made in class. Held Friday, October 20, from 6-8 pm, this class will cost $75.
"Garde Manger" will teach you how to make your own condiments and spice rubs. Create a unique spice mix, experiment with pickling, and make Chutney鈥攁 great way to elevate your meals. Take home everything you create, plus recipes to make much more. Held Tuesday, October 3, from 5:30-7:30 pm, this class will cost $75.
"Soups" is all about making perfect soups to freeze and reheat on a rather chilly night. We will make three different soups. Roasted tomato soup, taco soup, and chicken and wild rice soup. Held Wednesday, October 11, from 5:30-7:30 pm, this class will cost $75.
"PIES! PIES! PIES!" will teach you the tips and tricks to make a practically foolproof pie from start to finish. Learn to make an old-fashioned fruit pie with a crumble top and a decadent chocolate cream pie. Take home your complete pies plus recipes to create delicious holiday pies. Held Thursday, October 19, from 5:30-8:30 pm, this class will cost $100.
In "Spooky Good Halloween Treats," you will learn to make "poison" candied apples, decorate witch's cauldron cupcakes (with oozy filling), and creepy eyeball cake pops that will be a howl at your Halloween party. Held Monday, October 23, from 5:30-8 pm, this class will cost $75.
In "Chocolate Babka," you will learn to make this rich, flaky, traditional Easter European breakfast bread. Chef Brunner will show you how to make a brioche-type dough, the nut filling, and combine it to create excellent bread for your guests for breakfast or afternoon coffee. Held Wednesday, October 25, from 5-8 pm, this class will cost $100.
Registration
Seats are still available for these Workforce Continuing Education classes and do not require an application. To register, call Continuing Education at (910) 695-3980 between 8 am and 5 pm Mondays through Thursdays and 8 am-noon on Fridays. All major credit cards are accepted. Pre-register at sandhills.edu/wce/cereg.html. Pre-registration must be made two days before the start date of the class.
Next Session
Continuing Education classes begin throughout the semester. New and returning students do not need to apply to the College, simply register for class.
An eight-week session of fall semester curriculum classes begins on October 11. Offered online and in hybrid class formats, classes take only eight weeks to complete and award full credits. For all information, go to www.sandhills.edu/learn.
New students taking curriculum/college credit classes must apply before registering. 草霉视频原创 has an open-door policy, which means all applicants are accepted. On www.sandhills.edu, new students can find the application at the top right. Returning or current students can register by using Self-Service located on MySCC.
Boys & Girls Club
A Boys & Girls Club unit is offered on the 草霉视频原创 campus. It runs from 2:30 to 6:30 pm for kindergarten through fifth grade. The club is ideal for parents/guardians taking SCC afternoon or evening classes, those who need study time, need to utilize the computer lab, or work on projects. Club participants will receive homework assistance, and dinner is offered. The cost is $40 per child per year. The club provides transportation from McDeeds Creek, Farm Life, and Carthage Elementary schools.
In addition, drop-in services are available free of charge to 草霉视频原创 students from 6-9 pm. This is ideal for students taking afternoon or evening classes, working on group projects, or for other academic reasons. Classes for High School Students
Moore and Hoke County High School students can take SCC classes as juniors and seniors at no cost. High school counselors can help schedule these classes or home or private school students can contact Kim McMillan at mcmillank@sandhills.edu.
Students who reside in Moore and Hoke Counties and successfully complete the required number of classes through 草霉视频原创 while in high school can qualify to receive two full years of paid tuition through our 草霉视频原创 Promise program. 草霉视频原创 awards over $350,000 to pay tuition and fees for 草霉视频原创 Promise students each year. The 草霉视频原创 Promise applications are due each year by mid-July.
